This was a show at our local
Boys& Girls Club. It was a benefit for the club or something, and featured
4 of the areas younger bands. I showed up towards the end of Feedbacks
set, and didn't get to really get a feel for them. Rock? They could use a bit
of work, but sounded ok for their ages. They get positive points because they
had a girl in the band. Nice to see in Bend. Next up was Under
The Covers. This two man outfit played acoustic cover songs. That's kinda
funny, but not really. Singer was sick and the vocals were off. They played a
mix of songs from several different artists: Sublime, NOFX, Greenday, The
Beatles, etc. They did a Beck cover with back up female vocals that turned out
nicely.
(SIDE RANT\ What's that? Not
one, but TWO bend bands that had girls doing something in the same show?!
INSANE! But really nice to see, c'mon girls, I know you're out there. I know
you play instruments, write songs, and sing. Get out there and show your
shit off. /SIDE RANT)
Under The Covers also covered an
ICP song, for which the singer stripped to his boxers to sing...I think all I
have to say about that is his production company is called Fat Kid
Productions. Connor Oberst look out! Tesseract was next. They play kind
of a numetal/wannabeemo thing. They've got potential. The thing about
potential though is that it can swing either way, to the good, or to the suck.
I think they need to work on their vocals and stage presence a bit. Two
the Front was the next band. I've seen them several times now, and I'm
more impressed with every show. Their emo style has lots of instrumental bits
that almost delve into a sort of shoegazing style combined with whispered
lyrics that grow into frantic screams. They had some sound troubles at the beginning
meaning that the first song or two no one could hear the vocals at all. This
was fixed and the rest of their set was quite good. They even tried the ol'
"lets bring everyone up on stage" trick. This I think is more
effective on the last song, and if everyone knows the words and sings along
and gets into it.
Overall this show didn't impress me too much, but kudos to
everyone for trying. It represented what has come to be the typical Bend show
to me. Sound problems, vocals that just aren't loud enough, and kids sitting
in the back looking bored. Oh, props to Hydroponic
for hooking me up with their new demo. Sounding good kids.
