So this was a sudden surprise show! Due to unlucky circumstances (for them, lucky for me!) I managed to get a ride and a ticket to this fine show. This show sold out, and the staff of the Crystal Ballroom split the floor down the middle so the adults could happily drink while still getting close to the stage. They unfortunately gave far more room to the adult side than the underage side, forcing those under 21 to endure some insanely packed conditions. I don't like being touched by random sweaty strangers so I headed to the adult side of the room. After securing a great spot at the front I eagerly awaited Throwrag to take the stage. I'd never heard of these boys until tonight, and I was eager to see what they'd present to the crowd. Throwrag features some of the sleaziest band members I've ever seen, but they knew how to rock. The lead singer cavorted all over the place, including out into the crowd on a few songs. One of their members was a fat guy with a British accent who played a washboard slung over his chest that had a cowbell attached to the bottom of it. My fine readers, it just does NOT get any better than that. They played rock with some country influences and I'd gladly go see them again. The mighty Supersuckers were up next. I've been a long time fan of this band, and I was looking forward to seeing them more than any other band on the bill. I think I built up my expectations a bit too much, as I was rather letdown by their performance. They still rocked, but I think they were a bit too cocky for their own good. I don't like being told that a band is the "best band in the entire world" more than once, especially by the band itself. Even with the attitude the Supersuckers were pretty impressive. Their country tinged rock & roll is always fun, and I'm sure they made a few new fans this night. Flogging Molly then took the stage, and the crowd went nuts. (side note: If you are holding a beer and decide to mosh, PLEASE put down your beer first.) I wasn't as familiar with the band as most everyone in the crowd was, but I still had an incredible time. They put on one of the most entertaining shows I've attended, and the entire crowd seemed to dance along to each and every song. I have a hard time describing their sound as Irish punk due to the wide variety of non-punk instruments the 7 piece band uses to create their sound, but that's the closest descriptive I can come up with. The band played a huge set that lasted far longer than I was expecting, but due to their skill and the excitement in the air I hardly noticed the time fly by. Overall a great night of rock&roll at the lovely Crystal Ballroom. Special thanks to Ann for the tickets!
