_3/17/03-Pretty Girls Make Graves
[The Huntridge, Las Vegas]
_

We recently headed to Vegas for a trade show for our business, Third Millennium Comics. On St. Patrick's day I decided to forgo heading to assorted bars to watch drunken people with absolutely no Irish blood in them getting drunk and wearing stupid hats. Instead I wandered around Vegas until I found the Huntridge, where one of my favorite bands, Pretty Girls Make Graves, was playing. After dropping off my friends at one of the stinkiest casinos I've ever been in I made my way to the venue, and managed to talk my way in at a discounted price due to my lateness. I'd managed to miss ALL of the opening bands, and the first song from PGMG. I hurried into the room, figuring I'd have to push my way to the front, only to stop at the sight of the room. This was one of the most surprising shows I've ever been to, the crowd was insanely tiny, with perhaps only 40 or so people in a venue that could have easily held 2-300. Good for me, as I was able to make my way to the front very easily. PGMG was pretty damn incredible tonight. They played some old stuff, some new tunes, and didn't seem to let the tiny size of the audience affect their playing. One of the members even commented on the size of the crowd, stating that next time they played Vegas it should be in a smaller venue: "Like a cave". The crowd responded in kind: "Or my living room!!" shouted one fan. Their musical style I have a hard time nailing down to one category, so I'll just re-use my description I used when I listed their full length release as one of my fave albums of 2002: "There's emo, there's punk, there's hardcore, there's rock. Call it whatever you like, I'll just call it one of the best ." Their energetic stage show only reinforced my love for this band, and I highly recommend you check them out in any form.
