I somehow wound up going to this show with the singer from Anatomy Of A Ghost. As we were walking up to the venue he was suddenly surrounded by a half dozen giggly girls cooing over how cute he was. So I did what any self respecting music reviewer would do, I ditched him and went inside to find that I'd missed the majority of Watashi Wa's set. The two songs I did get to hear were decent. They were a bit harder live than they were on the songs I'd previously heard. The next band up was Acceptance, from Seattle. They played an energetic, but very short, set, and their post hardcore sound got the crowd a bit more excited than the opener did. Open Hand was up next, and this was where I started to wonder about the timing for this show, because again, they played a very very short set. What songs they did play were pretty damn good though. They reminded me of Canadian rockers Choke. I dunno what random sub-genre of punk I'd lump them into. Maybe technical hardcore with screaming vocals. Yeah, that sounds good. The next band to play was The Beautiful Mistake, and they're much better live than on their album. Screaming hardcore, again, and the crowd was really into them. Lots of people joined in on some of their more popular numbers, and the energy of the crowd finally started to reach a nice level while they played. Sadly I missed the majority of Elliots set, and what I heard didn't really make enough of an impression on me to want to check out more of their stuff. Their sound was a bit more refined, and much calmer than the previous bands, and perhaps served as a nice break for the crowd before Further Seems Forever came on stage. I have to admit that I'm not really a big fan of FSF's latest release: How To Start A Fire, but they've so far never failed to disappoint me live. Tonight was no exception, they came out and immediately the energy of the crowd surged to a peak, and every single song was met with enthusiasm and singing along from the crowd. I happened to be standing by a kid who couldn't have been more than ten, and he was belting out each and every song perfectly. It's cool to see younger kids getting into things. Further was incredible this night, but again, they played a really really short set. Granted there were 6 bands that had to play, but the show was completely over by 11, an it'd started at 6. Rather disappointing, but I assume there was a good reason for it. Curfews for the kids perhaps?
